Lockheed’s SAMARAI Monocopter Makes Its Public, Neon-Lit Debut

As promised, Lockheed Martin finally put its SAMARAI monocopter drone on display at AUVSI’s drone extravaganza in D.C. this week, for the first time flying it before a public audience as PopSci and everyone else in the air demo area looked on in awe. After all, the thing has just one rapidly rotating wing–it doesn’t really look like it can stay aloft by itself. Seeing, however, is believing.

The name (it’s not a typo) is actually derived from samara, or maple seeds, on which the monocopter design is based. Those seeds, sporting a single wing-like accessory, spiral from their branches and spin their way through the air–a natural development that allows maples to disperse their seeds more widely.

Lockheed’s version is a bit bigger (but sill weighs less than half a pound) and noisier, as you’ll see below. It also packs a camera that remarkably is able to maintain a steady view in one direction, demonstrating its eventual ISR potential (that camera also can turn 360 degrees with no gimbal). If you turn up your sound, you can hear Lockheed’s own Kingsley Fregene, principal investigator for SAMARAI, explaining how it works. What he didn’t explain to us is how he knew that adding a couple of neon lights to the bottom would make this demo so much cooler.

Steve Jobs Biography to be Released

After the release of the plans to build an Apple Campus in Cupertino, more Apple news has surfaced with recent information revealed on a Steve Jobs biography. The 448-page book will feature well over 40 interviews with the Apple CEO in addition to personal interviews with his friends, family, colleagues and competitors. The book will feature lessons about innovation, character, leadership and values as it talks about the revolution of digital industries by the Apple company. Interestingly enough Jobs wanted no control over the book but has approved its release, refusing to even read it before it becomes printed as he wanted nothing to be off limits. It should be interesting to see what more we have to learn from the innovative CEO, and be sure to look for the book to hit the shelves at your local bookstore on November 21, 2011.

adidas Originals B-Sides Launch Recap

New from Berlin-based shop No74 comes images from their highly-anticipated adidas Originals B-Sides launch event, as well as some commemorative posters featuring the BAPE Superstar, ideal for both those who couldn’t scoop up the shoe in time and those who’d like a constant reminder of their ownership alike. It looks like No47 had quite the line outside their shop upon the B-Sides’ release, with European adidas fans flaunting their favorite kicks, relaxing and anticipating what was to come before the store opened its doors. Although the shoes are long gone, some of the posters (which were produced alongside Sneaker Freaker) might still be hanging around the shop.

Banksy – “The Antics Roadshow”

New from British graffiti artist-cum-counterculture icon Banksy comes “The Antics Roadshow,” a slightly satirical yet seriously entertaining documentary regarding anarchists, pranksters and dilettantes the world over. From a man who acts out video games in real life (imagine Super Mario buzzing by you in his kart while hurling a banana into moving traffic) to the guy who essentially invented throwing pies at celebrities and even an interview with a person who broke into the Queen’s bathroom, the content on The Antics Roadshow is not only cleverly named but also quite well conceived. Curious troublemakers should be sure to check out Banksy’s latest timely video piece.

The relocation of Apple’s flagship headquarters from Cupertino’s Infinity Loop to a grassy 150 acres has been the talk of Silicon Valley. Freshly released details include the commission of United Kingdom architects Foster + Partners in tandem with ARUP North America and Kier & Wright, a local civil engineering firm that counts the likes of eBay and NVIDIA as clients.

The circular design was implemented by Apple themselves – an absolutely curved infrastructure void of straight angled glass with a courtyard situated in its core; cited as both to enhance campus security and internal circulations. The 2.8 million square feet on which it is situated on includes an office and R&D facilities for up to 13,000 employees, a 1000-seat auditorium, fitness center, research facilities, central plant and underground parking.

Perhaps Apple’s greatest achievement comes from its environmental endeavors through generating its own electricity via an on-site central plant, open green spaces for employee enjoyment, and “to exceed sustainability goals through integrated design and development.”

Blueprints and mockups assume the project is approaching an impending green light per city approval and slated for an opening as soon as 2015.

Counter-Strike “Global Offensive” Announcement

For over a decade, videogame developer Valve’s tactical first-person shooter Counter-Strike has reigned as one of the PC’s most popular hits. What started as a modification from the Valve title Half-Life grew into a retail game of its own, spawning a cultural boom around the title spanning worldwide tournaments, professional gaming leagues, and consecutive offshoots of the game. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive launches in early 2012, which will be the next major installment since 2004′s Counter-Strike: Source. Players can look forward to a slew of new maps, characters, weapons, and game modes, as well as updated fan-favorite content. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will span numerous platforms including PC, Mac, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

Interview Magazine: Tyler, the Creator Interview

Love them or hate them, the Odd Future gang doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. From press junkets to European tours, Tyler and his crew have become veritable celebrities – respected by fans and fellow artists alike for their raw, sparsely-produced and at times bizarre forays into the world of hip-hop. New from the late Andy Warhol’s gem of a magazine, Interview, comes an (you guessed it) interview with Tyler, the Creator conducted by the oft-maligned rapper Waka Flocka Flame. Some of the highlights of the piece can be found below, but those interested should be sure to check out the whole article over at Interview.

FLAME: All right. So firstly, what do y’all think is so odd about the future?
TYLER: What’s odd about the future? I think we’re all gonna die pretty soon, and the animals are gonna take over—like ostriches and shit. I think they’re gonna take over the world and we’re gonna be their slaves.

So would you describe Odd Future as a hip-hop heavy-metal group? Or a punk-rock rap group? How do you describe what you and your crew do?
I don’t like either description. I don’t like being put in a box. I just make music, you know? When you’re put in a box, people have a set mind-state of what your music could sound like before they even look into it. Like, if no one ever heard of me, but I’m hip-hop-metal-rock, then they’re already gonna have an expectation of what the music will sound like. Then, when they go in and finally listen to it, it might be different from what they thought, and they could automatically hate it because they already had expectations.

I saw y’all on Jimmy Fallon, and I wanna know something: why do y’all always have lawn gnomes on stage?
Oh, because my album, Goblin, just hit, and in German history, a goblin is the evil cousin of the lawn gnome. So I thought it’d be cool to have lawn gnomes on stage ’cause they look cool but they’re the cousins of goblins and leprechauns and shit like that. I just thought it’d be cool to have happy-ass lawn gnomes while I’m on stage lookin’ all mean and shit.

In that video y’all directed called “Yonkers,” you eat that cockroach, then you vomit it back up, then you’re bleeding out your nose, then you’re hangin’ yourself.
Yeah.

Is there something deeper behind it? What do those images mean?
Well, a lot of people think that stuff is deeper than it really is. Some people just think too much. Like, my manager knows I wanna be a video director, so he was like, “Hey, just write a video, write the treatment for it, and we’ll shoot it.” So I was like, “All right, fuck it. I’ll eat a cockroach, I’ll throw up, and then I’ll hang myself . . . It’s, like, no subliminal messages or secret meanings or anything. I just personally think the shit would look really cool, so I did it. I just like doing shit that I think is cool, and people happen to like it, so I’m pretty, like, fortunate for that. So I’m gonna just continue to be myself and do what I like. Again, people are just so quick to judge shit ’cause they don’t understand it. But I understand what I’m doing, and that’s all that should matter.
